ICE MELTING: WEEK 3 - Frozen SIGHT Words
FROZEN SIGHT WORDS
July 10, 2013
We filled various size and shaped bowls with water. Next, we added 3 plastic letters, that spell sight words and food coloring. We placed the bowls in the freezer over-night. In the morning, the fun began!!!
The students discovered the letters in the ice and were guessing the sight words as they were handling the ice. When the ice melted, they put the letters in order to spell the sight words. Then, they wrote a sentence, including 1 or 2 sight words and drew pictures to complement their sentences. FUN, FUN, FUN!!

SUMMER CAMP: WEEK 3
ICE MELTING EXPERIMENT
Step 1: We placed 2 blocks of ice in seperate containers.
Step 2: We sprinkled salt on 1 block of ice. Then, we made predictions of he salt reacting to the ice. For example: Will the salt keep the ice cold, resulting in the ice melting slowly, or will the salt help the ice to melt quickly? Will the salt cause the ice to change color? Will the salt keep the ice frozen on a hot sunny day?
Step 3: We added a minimal amount of red and blue food coloring and made observations. (While we waited, we occupied ourselves by writing our names with chalk, then traced over the letters with ice)
Step 4: We observed the ice blocks. We discovered that salt on ice creates many holes in the ice causing it to melt faster than the ice without salt. The ice without salt was smooth. We also discovered that red and blue creates a new color, purple!
